somethin_random's goodbye gift, though I'm a bit early. ^^;; I hope you enjoy it!
I. good night
Wrappers, crumbs and mostly empty bottles are sprawled across the room. Alex watches as Marissa lazily downs the rest of her vodka bottle, before wobbling on her feet and falling. Alex darts to catch her and gingerly takes the bottle away from her. “I think you’ve had enough,” Alex says, her voice slurring, though she’s impressed by how much she did drink.
She doesn’t respond. She carries Marissa—sometimes wobbling herself—to the couch. She grabs a blanket and puts it on her, gently. Impulsively, she kisses her on the cheek. “Good night,” she whispers. Marissa smiles in her sleep.
II. jolt!
She watches her walk towards her shower longingly, until Marissa takes off her shirt mid-stride. Alex’s eyes pop open in surprise, and when Marissa turns around—barely covering her chest, she can only nod.
Her heart is racing from the jolt, and from the memory of smooth tanned skin, disappearing beneath the cloth. A fantasy comes unwittingly to Alex’s mind, of running towards her and pushing her up against the wall, letting the shirt drop, and claiming a passionate kiss, melding their bodies together while their hands explore.
The image lingers, and Alex blushes, shaking it away from her mind.
III. if only I could make you mine
“What are you doing with me?" Alex finally asks. At Marissa’s confusion, she explains what she really means.
The last few weeks have been a whirlwind for her. Spending so much time with her has been intoxicating in ways alcohol could never be. And now their closeness, their intimacy, reminds her of previous relationships. All she wants is to know.
When Marissa avoids the question and leaves with evident confusion, she lets her, confused herself. She was silly to think that she would jump into her arms and kiss her, but she wants this so much she can hardly breathe.
IV. in a good mood
“We were each other’s in-between people,” Alex explains to Seth. He was going from Summer, her, to Summer again. She was going from Jodie, to Seth, to…
“We helped each other get ready for what’s next,” she says, laughing internally when she realized she was parroting Marissa’s earlier words.
After bidding each other fond farewells, she swished her way out of the house. A breakup had never been so simple. Her prospects have never looked better.
She passes by Marissa’s old home—Seth mentioned it once—and she laughs at the irony. Moving from Seth to Marissa. She smiles happily.
V. invincible; unrivaled
Alex glances at the happy couples around her, feeling uncomfortable. She finds herself slowly stepping away.
Warmth encircling her hand stops her, and she whips her head to see Marissa standing so close. She squeezes her hand and winks, causing Alex to relax. A wide smile creeps up on both their faces—special smiles, just for each other. Alex repositions her hand and Marissa inches closer, leaving the softest of kisses on her cheek, before looking out.
She follows her gaze, filling up with warmth. Together, with Marissa, Alex has never felt so strong. Amidst the couples, she feels unrivaled.
