an exercise in creative writing

beautiful. everything around her was suddenly filled with beauty. every light wave hitting her eyes delighted her with its color and vibrancy.

to everyone else, that afternoon was just another day. but not to her. other people walked by and didn’t notice how beautiful the sunlight was today, but she did. she looked around herself, amazed with the way the sun’s rays hit everything so perfectly. it was a different kind of sunlight than she remembered. a cold gust of wind blew past, and she shivered deep down to her bones, but she relished the feeling because feeling the wind, feeling the cold meant that she was alive.

she skipped down the street merrily, beaming brightly at every gorgeous human being that she passed. as they returned her smile a little surprised, she wondered about one’s capability to affect others. who knew what these people were going through in their life, yet she had still made them smile, had made a small spark of life reach all their eyes. and she found that even more amazing, and she just felt the power coursing through her with that knowledge, but it wasn’t destructive power. no, not in the negative way. it was the power she knew she had to destroy all the demons attacking one’s soul, and rebuild someone’s heart so they beat regularly again. it was the power to recreate.

she continued down her path, flowers seeming to bloom into vivid colors as she walked. she could have been content forever with just walking down that lane, taking in the beauty of the world. but there was an end.

at the end of the road, a crowd of people were waiting for her. she couldn’t see their faces, but she knew deep in her heart that these were the people that she loved the most in her life, and they wanted to see her. she sped up, breaking out into a run to reach them. as she approached closer, they all opened her arms to her, and with a great cry celebrating life, she reached them, and they embraced her, filling her heart with love.

suddenly, everything disappeared. she opened her eyes to see darkness. all the beauty that she had seen earlier was shrouded, making them all appear ugly. there was no sunlight, yet there was no moonlight either. another gust of wind hit her, but instead of being something life affirming, it attacked her, and the coldness seeped so deeply into her skin that the thought of warmth was foreign to her.

she looked around her frantically, looking for any sign of life other than her own. but there was no one. no one walking down the street. and the crowd of her loved ones had completely dispersed, leaving her alone… but did they ever really exist? she couldn’t see their faces…

“welcome back to yourself,” she whispered, and the sound echoed around her. she waited, but nothing answered back, and she knew that she was truly alone.
